NLIU Blogger acknowledged in the Indian Yearbook of International Law

NLIU Blogger Meghna Agarwal of 'Legal Drift' fame, an active and informative blog that includes articles on various important legal issues, recently got credited for her research assistance in a paper published in the inaugural issue of the Indian Yearbook of International Law & Policy. The article, written by Prof. Prabhakar has also cited one of his comments on Legal Drift in the References of his paper.

Legal Drift is one of two internet portals run by NLIU students that have gained popularity across the country, with the other one being Nikita Anand's 'Mighty Laws,' having a facebook following of over a 1000 people, with both of these students belonging to the Batch of 2013.

About Prof Prabhakar

Professor Prabhakar Singh is a young name in the field of international legal scholarship and the Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL). He is an alumni of NLIU, Bhopal and has obtained his LLM in International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO) from the University de Barcelona, Spain. He has published more than 17 journal articles in leading international law journals and books worldwide. He is currently working as Assistant Professor at the Jindal Global Law School, India.

NLIU wins Second Place at National Parliamentary Debate Competition

Apart from its recent success at Mukarji Memorial where Bishen Jeswant broke as an adjudicator and so did a team comprising of Sarabjeet Singh and Apurv Kumar Mishra, the NLIU Debating Society has more to tell due to it's success at the RMLNLU National Parliamentary Debate Competition. NLIU, Bhopal were declared Runners Up in the competition along with Rijoy Bhaumik being adjudged as ‘The Best Speaker’ and Bishen Jeswant adjudged as ‘The Best Speaker Finals’. The University was represented by Aditi Sara Verghese, Rijoy Bhaumik and Bishen Jeswant. The competition saw the participation of various law schools from all across the country such as GNLU, Amity Law School, Alighar Muslim University, RGNUL, NLIU etc. The keenly contested final round was won by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala. The competition had 2 rounds of preliminaries followed by the semi finals and then the final.

The NLIU Law Review : Issue I is out!

Aristotle said, “The law is reason, free from passion.” However, as law students studying in this era where developments in technology and evolution of society have led to viewing the law in an extremely opinionated way; we respectfully beg to differ! The law has become a subject of study which has infiltrated every news item, almost every current controversy which is in the spotlight.

On this note, the student body of the National Law Institute University is proud to announce the launch of the first edition of the NLIU Law Review. The law review is the first of its kind initiated by the students of National Law Institute University, Bhopal as an attempt to encourage young minds to research on hitherto unexplored areas of law. Though increased interconnectivity and communication in the legal profession has led to better understanding of many areas which were earlier not very well researched; there is still virgin territory as regards new laws and legal developments that is calling out to be discovered by eager minds. The Law Review will come out with three editions every year, at the end of each academic trimester.

The main aim behind initiating a student-run Law Review of this kind was to inculcate the spirit of research in the students in furtherance of the academic standards set by the University. The aim of the Review was to invite Articles, Essays, Case Notes and Comments from a wide range of legal sub-disciplines and a variety of topics of legal and contemporary relevance from law universities in India and abroad. On receiving the same, the Articles were subjected to various levels of review before they were shortlisted and finalized for publication. The Student Body of the Law Review was divided into the Management, Editorial and Printing and Publishing Board for coordinating various aspects of the Review such as the review of the articles, the layout and design etc.

The content review was done through two stages- the technical reviewing as well as main content reviewing. Technical reviewing was done to ensure uniformity in citation methods and footnoting. The Content Review Committee was entrusted with the task of checking for plagiarism and factual accuracy of the Articles. The Publishing Committee dealt with the final layout of the Review and printing technicalities. It is a matter of great pride that the committees coordinated with each other in an extremely efficient manner to make the timely release of the first issue as smooth as possible. It is due to the diligence and the 24/7 commitment of the members of the Student Body that the entire process could be completed to the satisfaction of all. It is no mean feat to come together with the first edition of a review which had for long been a dream of the students of this University. The release of this issue is thus a very encouraging step for the students in their future endeavors.

We hope that our efforts are recognized and appreciated by the legal community. Through the NLIU Law Review we hope to integrate ourselves with our counterparts in the Law Universities and other legal publications for the mutual benefit and enrichment of all those involved. We are hopeful that the Review turns out to be an interesting read for all, and that the contributions to the future editions are made with the same level of enthusiasm.

Over 17,000 candidates for CLAT 2010: Helpline for candidates by NLIU

Over 17,000 candidates have registered to take the Common Law Admission Test 2010 (CLAT 2010) on May 9 for admission to leading law schools in the country.

The test is being conducted by the University.

“This year, 17,300 candidates have registered to attempt CLAT 2010,” DK Singh, officer in charge, CLAT, said. The number is an increase of over 2,000 compared to CLAT 2009.
“We have started the process of dispatching hall tickets to the registered candidates.”

The organisers of CLAT 2010 have added one more city, Jaipur, to the list of venues for the test in India. “Jaipur will also host the CLAT 2010 in addition to 16 other cities,” Singh said. “There should be around 35 test centres for CLAT this year,” he said.

The National Law School of India University, Bangalore, the oldest law school among the 11 institutes, had conducted the first CLAT in 2008; NALSAR University, Hyderabad, had organised CLAT 2009.

CLAT 2010 will be held from 3pm to 5pm on May 9 and the results will be out by May 29.

Last year, over 15,000 had registered to take the test, but only 12,270 students cleared it. The process for admission to the participating law schools will be completed by June 28 and classes are slated to commence on July 1.

The National Law Institute University, Bhopal has set up helpline facilities for candidates.

NLIU bags 'Outstanding New School' Trophy at the International Mediation Tournament, Chicago

This has turned out to be the year when the efforts of the Alternate Dispute Resolution Cell (ADRC) have received their due credit, as another feather in ADRC's cap, in addition to the recent 5th Rank at TNC - Leipzig, Germany, i.e. the trophy for 'Outstanding New School' has gone to the team of NLIU Bhopal, in the prestigious International Law School Mediation Tournament, Chicago.

A team comprising of Raghav Ghei, Lavanya Julaniya, both being 1st year students of the University, with the able and experienced guidance of Chetan Kanungo, the 3rd team member, who was also a part of the team that represented the university at TNC - 2010 as well as INC - 2009, went through rigorous sessions of Mediation against other Internationally renowned law schools, to come home with an amazing experience, fame to the University and a trophy that marks NLIU's premier status in International achievements in Alternate Dispute Resolution this year.

5th position to N.L.I.U. at The Negotiation Challenge - 2010

A team comprising of Chetan Kanungo, Albin Thomas and Vinesh Chandel represented N.L.I.U. at The Negotiation Challenge - 2010 organized by the Leipzig School of Management, Germany, and stood at an honourable 5th position in the competition which had participation from internationally renowned law schools and management universities including Harvard Law School, Georgetown Law University and University of California Hastings. This was the first time that N.L.I.U. took part in the competition and was one of the only two Indian Universities which were a part of the competition with the other one being National Law School, Bangalore.

Presentation on International Taxation

International Taxation has been source of immense litigation in our country, apex court decisions such as the Azadi Bacahao Andolan Case, the Morgan Stanley Case and the Hutch-Vodafone Litigation has built the Indian jurisprudence pertaining to International Taxation. Hence, as an endeavour to assist and guide the students towards a deeper understanding of the core-root issues pertaining to this field , the Center for Business and Commercial Laws (CBCL) arranged for a presentation on the "Basics of International Taxation" by Mr Dhruv Sanghavi, Associate, Vaish Law Associates (International Taxation Team). The lecture dealt with the basics of International Taxation so as to make the students understand the crux of the subject.

It was an extensive two-part lecture series that was kept interactive in nature by Mr Sanghavi, and ended on a sincere vote of thanks by Aditya Bhattacharya and Deeksha Manchanda of the Centre of Commercial and Business Laws, N.L.I.U.
